In this sci-fi fantasy for young adults, a sixteen-year-old-girl named Silver Spike wakes up at a human fortress where the villain, James Stoshen, tortures her. She escapes and later finds a refuge fortress with the help of an animal that can stand on two legs. In this fortress, mutated people named Phlefidides (fle-fi-dides) live. They are part human, part animal. She befriends two of them (Spikey and Bull Back) before the fortress is attacked by Stoshen.

Silver Spike is shot twice, but wakes up to discover that she can’t die. A mutant named Rhino Horn helps her before Stoshen can attack again. This teenage girl protects herself by expelling silver spikes that come out of her body and kill Stoshen’s henchmen. But in the battle, Rhino Horn dies. The next day, Bull Back is attacked and injured by a mutated human named Tiger Stripes. Silver Spike tries to help, but ends up acting in aggression.
