Memoir: It Takes a Lot to Still Be Standing After Sexual Abuse

I’m Still Standing: Through Strength and Courage is a true story of standing tall in the face of betrayal, disbelief, and self-realisation. The author’s honest portrayal of her life shows deep courage and the will to overcome early childhood abuse.

Being a teenager can be difficult at the best of times. Raewyn’s downward spiral was triggered with the death of her grandfather when she was 12. Around him, she felt safe, but without her beloved grandfather, she began to remember and unravel the mystery of her insecurities and depression. All Raewyn wanted to do was eat and sleep. Everything irritated her and she felt completely alone. Now she can look back on those years and realize that she was holding in the truth, by not wanting to face the horrors of her ruined childhood.

As haunting dreams begin to reveal the deep memories of the family member who sexually abused her, Raewyn shares her pain with her parents. But it was only at age 17 that she finally begins the long journey to recovery by making a formal complaint to the police. This is not an easy memoir to read, but it is an important one.
