Seven Cats and the Big Gray Fence
By Melissa Risselada
They say curiosity killed the cat! See what happens when seven curious cats wonder what lies beyond the solid fence in their own backyard. Seven Cats and the Big Gray Fence will challenge young readers to solve the mystery of discovering the things that we cannot see. This fun children’s tale is about a group of cats who live together, but are slightly bored with each other’s company. While looking for excitement, they focus on the gray fence in their backyard, because they can’t see through it. Their imaginations work constantly in a quest to find what could possibly be back there. Each of the cats has heard sounds coming from behind the fence that they can’t identify. With their interest peaked, things get more and more interesting until day the fence gets torn down. The mystery comes to a head and the cats learn a valuable lesson, after which they become better friends. What makes each cat character unique is the cat’s personality and approach to the problem. Seven Cats have seven different stories to tell. Look for further adventures in the series. A Wisconsin native, Melissa Risselada lived in Massachusetts before settling in Michigan. This is the first book of a series based on her seven cats. “The characters are modeled after people, my own kids and grandkids, in fact, and have the same desires and curiosity that you would expect from country kids.”

Children will love having this book read to them and parents and grandparents will love reading it to them! The author does a wonderful job developing the personalities of the cats and takes you through the story in a wonderful way. I not only purchased this book as Christmas gifts for my great nieces and great nephew, I purchased a copy of it for the middle school library I work at because I know students of all ages will enjoy the story.
I would recommend this as a gift or to have on hand for your own children or grandchildren.

I bought this for my two young granddaughters who live in another state. The day after its arrival, my daughter called to tell me how much her girls loved the book. The five-year-old isn’t one that sits for long, but she was enthralled with the story and didn’t move until the last page was turned. Great book for the under-10 crowd.
