Reviews

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. So in my usual brutal honest fashion here it is…

Firstly, I have to congratulate the author for writing a decent vampire book without a single sex scene. It may sound odd for me to say that. And I myself usually prefer my vampires to be slaves to their lust for flesh as well as blood. But in this book it worked without this.

Also there isn’t the usual explicit gore. There is still plenty of blood but it’s not done in the overly dramatic fashion of a bloodbath.

So, this is a far more subtle kind of vampire story, with an emphasis on story.

However, it is not without its flaws.
There were a few things which just didn’t sit right with me. Such as the length of time Sebastian had with his mother, the entirity of which was spent with him acting like a petulant teenager. I would have loved some more story development here.

I also didn’t like the wolves. They felt stilted, and their ritual was very odd. And perhaps we just didn’t see them enough? Someone else pointed out the feel of a nod at Twilight here, and I agree. It’s not fan fiction, and not copying. But it felt they were there for effect rather than with purpose.

I wasn’t convinced on Hanna’s sudden take over of the narration. Sebastian had taken this role for most of the book, then she suddenly pipes up. I understand the reasoning and did get used to it, but it just felt a bit jarring.

Also, this book could perhaps do with another edit? It’s mainly written well, but there’s one too many errors which did start to annoy me (I appreciate this is easily done though, and maybe most readers will be happy to overlook them).

I really liked the way the juxtaposition of good and evil; the way the pencil lines were drawn then smudged to hell. What is good, what is bad? Good questions posed effectively.

I also enjoyed Hanna’s development, but I don’t want to say too much about that for fear of spoilers.

On the whole I enjoyed this book, and was torn between 3 & 4 stars.
I awarded 4 on the basis that by the end I had become gripped and had to keep reading. And I really want to read the sequel when it comes out.

Will vampire genre readers like it? I think so, as long as they open their minds to a slightly different way of portrayal.

It’s a definite must read for romance readers though; there’s a beautiful love story in here.

Initially, I struggled with this book. For something like the first twenty percent of the book, the author’s writing style seemed rather undeveloped, in particular the repetitive and unrealistic dialogue. She has also written in a few anachronisms (I could be wrong, but I doubt there were many people who could have made a steel door in 1801, some half a century before the invention of the bessemer process and nobody would have used the words ‘hello’ and ‘okay’ for another few decades). But these are minor things that I, as a reader, am willing to overlook if the story is good.

After the initial rough patch though, everything changes. Over the course of a couple of chapters, the writing improves and a gripping plot begins to emerge. This is not a genre that I have read a great deal of, but the impression I get from this novel is that the author is a talented storyteller who has learned the craft of writing as she went.

I can’t say the author’s writing is perfect, as it would benefit from a good looking over by an editor. I was tempted to dock this book a point or two, but that wouldn’t be doing this superb novel justice. I’ve only read a couple of Anne Rice’s books, but I would rate this story higher than either of them.

I’m glad that I stuck with this story past the initial few chapters and the ending left me wanting more. Now the author is in her stride, I am confident that her next book will be of an even higher standard and I daresay she will continue to improve further with each instalment.

An unusual tale in these times of sparkling sexualised vampires, this has an air of old-fashioned gothic horror, but without the gore common to modern horror although there is plenty of blood drinking.
The book delves into the psyche of Sebastian, how he copes with being made vampire by his mother, and then goes off the rails when she is murdered by humans. His blood lust fades when he discovered the baby daughter of his most recent victim. Her vulnerability and innocence causes him to spare her life and he sets her up with foster parents.
A love story develops between the two as she matures, and just for fun there are wolves involved. \all in all, worth a read.
5.0 out of 5 starsA gripping, high-quality vampire adventure! 1 Jun. 2015

As a long-time fan of the vampire genre, my taste has become a little jaded on the paranormal front . This means I often bypass books in this genre, simple because it seems like so many are either poorly done rethreads or so ridiculous that I can’t maintain any interest.SEBASTIAN might have just changed my mind about all that. This book is deep and rich and thoroughly satisfying. You can read other reviews for the basic plot about the unusual beginnings of the love between Sebastian and Hanna, but what I’d like to focus on is just how well Ms. Johnson brought this story to life. This is a complex story with many-faceted characters (not just the leads, but also “supporting” characters you might along the way).I really, really like the way she developed the story line about Sebastian sparing baby Hanna and then loving her as an adult. To me, this was far better done than the semi-icky attraction between Jacob and Renesmme. in BREAKING DAWN. Despite the vast differences in age and experience, Sebastian and Hanna’s attraction feels like that of equals, and this is a credit to what a great job Ms. Johnson has done in creating Hanna as such a strong female lead. In the end, they’re “equals” in the most important way of all: they both have an equal desire and need for each other, two halves that crave being completed. Fantastic, unexpected chemistry!

A final word that’s slightly off-topic to the book. Take a moment to read Ms. Johnson’s profile. This is an author who dearly loves her craft, and for burgeoning authors…read her advice about how to write a novel. These are hard-won pearls of wisdom. I looked for other works, but I believe this is Ms. Johnson’s debut work (unless there are other pen names). I sincerely hope she’ll produce more books because Amazon needs high-quality novels like this to shine against the sea of dreck that seems to be on the rise.

Great job, Ms. Johnson. I thoroughly enjoyed your work, and I look forward to reading more of it!

It starts at a trot, jumps to a canter and then bursts into a canter. Annoyingly it then leaves you wanting more.A tale of A vampire, a woman with a secret and the ubiquitous werewolf. Its not Twilight (thank god)At a trot we discover Sebastian, learning perhaps a little too much about his background, how he has come to be the person, his hopes and fears so to speak. As The bset reviews are those that don’t give away too much of the story I wont discuss this bit to much. I appreciate that on first reading this section of this review the fact i describe this as trotting can perhaps be seen as a negative, It shouldnt be. Its an improtant part of building the character and the time spent investing in Sebastian will be rewarded.

We move to the canter, the middle section of the book introduces us to Hanna, although mostly still written from Sebastians point of view we watch voyeruistially at time as a young girl blossoms to woman hood, We learn Anna more through the eyes of Sebastian so do not get quite the depth of character we get from him, so she remains mysterious, etheral. The (probably) straight A student that all the guys dream of getting with but shes not interested. Is she fridgid? or is she saving herself for somebody.

Our characters meet, the book goes up a gear and the author kicks the narative into a canter, we learn through a series of revelations some of the missing pieces of Hanna’s life and through her narrative something of her inner thoughts.

Ok the voyeur wants them to get it on, the sexual tension between them is electric, its gonna happen you can feel it but something is holding them back…….

A good read that needs to be invested in, A book to read large chunks of, perhaps by a pool or wrapped up warm on a dark moonlit evening. Unfortunatly due to my own circumstances I was forced to read this piecemeal which perhaps skewered my thoughts certainly in regards to the front end of the book.

Without spoiling the ending, I assume a sequal is in the offing, If so its one I will be saving for a holiday.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anne Rice, Make Way for Elizabeth Johnson! 18 April 2015

Anne Rice, meet Elizabeth Johnson. Anne Rice has written several excellent books in the vampire genre. Elizabeth Johnson has penned her first vampire novel, Sebastian-The Life of Sebastian and Hanna Greene. Rice has had several years to develop the characters and Elizabeth is just beginning to develop the characters of Sebastian, a vampire with a heart, and Hanna, the progeny of a human female and another (I don’t want to spoil it for you; read the book to find out what I mean).Ms. Johnson has done a fantastic job introducing us to the lives of Sebastian Francis and Hanna Greene. If you love a good romantic vampire novel, you’ll love this one. Sebastian is not your typical vampire; he doesn’t exist to pray on humanity, craving seduction and the lust for human blood. Hannah is not your typical 17-year-old English lass; she is very different, possessing powers beyond her understanding. Elizabeth Johnson’s creation of Sebastian and Hanna demonstrates what it means to be in love, one with another, fully and all-consuming. Sebastian will stop at nothing to protect Hanna and Hanna will do everything in her power to protect Sebastian. But there are others in their lives that would see their close bond broken asunder and at any cost. Will their love for each other survive? Ms. Johnson has written a fast-paced romantic thriller; her ending will leave you breathless and yearning for more. My guess is that this book is the first of a trilogy; I can’t wait to read the next installment of the lives of Sebastian and Hanna

Extraordinary tale about Sebastian, a vampire and Hanna, the daughter of an Archangel. Sebastian, a vampire at eighteen via his mother, was reared by her not to hunt humans. However, when she was killed by them, he turned and he wanted to make all humans pay for her death. He killed Hanna’s human mother, then discovered her baby in a bag and fell in love with her. She became his reason for change, to no longer kill humans. He knew he couldn’t raise her, so he found parents for her and financially supported them in secret. He continued to be drawn to her, he couldn’t stay away despite the danger of being found out. Hanna had special powers of her own. She was drawn to him and eventually fell into romantic love with him, but that’s not the end of the story.

Brilliant book.
I really love this book, and I will recommend it to anyone that wants a brilliant Vampire Novel. I know it’s YA but really it’s for anyone who loves a beautiful well-paced story. I literally couldn’t drop the book. I just love how Sebastian loves Hanna, at first I wasn’t sure about the transition of his love from “Father figure” to lover but it’s just brilliant. It’s got everything in it, blood, war, love, secrets, unrequited love and the best of all, a heroine that is not a wimp. Sebastian is such a great read , get it now..

Sebastian: The Life of Sebastian and Hanna Greene is a truly unique romance about a vampire and a young girl who starts as his victim, then becomes his ward, and later finally his lover. Sebastian and Hanna’s initial encounter is not unlike the lion and the mouse, or the young girl who gives Frankenstein’s monster a flower; the image of true helplessness touches something emotional in the hardened and angry creature. But things change as she ages, even though her prior transgressor-turned-father-figure has not; and suddenly Sebastian is left to discover his feelings have changed and her circumstances are more dire. This is a gripping, somewhat dark and emotional novel, dripping with feeling. I loved Johnson’s writing style and am invigorated by this charming debut. I can’t wait to read more.

First off I would like to note that I love books about vampires! After reading the description, I knew that this was a book that I would really enjoy reading. Sebastian is like every other 18 year-old kid, until his mom comes back and turns him into a vampire. He thought that his mom was dead, but it turns out she’s not and now she is teaching him how to live amongst the humans as a vampire. His mom ends up dying and Sebastian can’t help but blame the humans and he’s pretty much out on a killing spree to kill them all. He kills a mother, but can’t kill her young daughter. He names her Hannah and gives her to a family along with the money to provide for her. Sebastian isn’t really sure about the type of love he has for Hannah. When she was younger it was more like a fatherly love, but once he goes back and sees her all grown up he falls in love with her as a lover. The book reminded me a little bit of Twilight. I absolutely loved that series and there were similar characters in this book. I feel like this book has a lot of potential to be a huge hit! I’m going to share it with all my friends as it was just as good as, if not better than Twilight. This book really blew my mind away and I can’t wait until the author comes out with a book 2! I hope that the series will keep continuing on. It’s such a great piece of work, fun to read and I just can’t wait for more.

As I was reading along, I found myself wondering whether the characters of this book would convince me. I was pleasantly surprised to discover how the author slowly built up the action and placed his characters in intriguing scenarios. The book tells the story of a teenage boy that is turned into a vampire by his own mother. I specifically enjoyed her strong and faithful character and the mother-son relationship the author described so intensely. After losing her the second time, Sebastian went downhill, spending hundreds of years revenging the most important person of his life. My favorite chapter was the one describing Sebastian’s encounter with the blue-eyed baby which he came to love so deeply in so many ways. I think most of us can relate to the feeling of loving someone so truly and feeling the imperative need to protect them. It touched me how Sebastian, the cold-blooded vampire, found his weakness and had to place himself as far away as possible from her. This book is both edgy and sensitive. The scene where Hannah has to face the same tragedy that Sebastian once did, is described so vividly it will give you chills.
I will not give away the end but I will say that this sweet and romantic story will leave you wanting to read more of the author’s work!
