Neil Gossai was born mentally challenged. Growing up in Guyana, Neil never learned to speak and was never taught how to experience and enter the social world. Although Neil grew to be a physically strong young man, Gossai never really knew his brother. They never played together, shared secrets and never expressed affection for one another.

Dr. Hemchand Gossai is a writer and university professor. He has written several scholarly books and articles and a nonfiction memoir, River Crossings that inspired this tribute to his brother, Neil.
